Welcome to First Grade at Buckley Community Schools! I am excited to begin our new adventure.
Our supply list is short. Your child will need pencils, erasers, a backpack, crayons, 4 sturdy 2-pocket folders, 4 gallon size zip top bags (to protect take-home books), and several black Expo dry erase markers. Please send a pair of tennis shoes if your child doesn't wear them to school. We have gym three times a week. This would be a good time to review shoe tying with your student. Michigan temperatures vary wildly. An extra sweatshirt in the locker will be welcome on chilly days.
Your student will bring home a folder most nights with graded work, unfinished work, homework or notes. Our math program has homework most nights. Homework will be to practice a skill that was taught that week. To encourage the completion and return of homework, small incentives will be given! When we begin spelling, the lists and packets will come home on Mondays and be due back Friday morning. Please check the folder every night! Send back the folder each morning. I will check it for notes or lunch money from you.
We have breakfast in our rooms each morning. Donations of paper towels are greatly appreciated! Following afternoon recess, we will break for a snack. Donations of snacks such as Goldfish crackers, pretzels, Teddy Grahams and so on are also appreciated. Please do not send juice as it comes with breakfast. Zip top snack and sandwich bags are also very handy. Of course, you may send a personal snack with your child if you desire. Just try to send nutritious (not sugary) snacks.
There will be three school parties: Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day. You may sign up for treats for the parties at Open House. Of course, you are very welcome to attend! Our big field trip will be to the dunes the last week of school.
Each child is assigned one day a week to share with us at Show and Tell. Please don't send large, valuable or breakable things. You could, however, send a picture! Popular items have been science, nature, and vacations. I will assign each child a day for his/her Show and Tell. The list will be in your first Friday note.
Each Monday a student will be designated the "Star Student" for the week. At Open House, everyone will receive an "All About Me" page to complete. I will also take each child's picture. Those facts will be posted along with your child's picture when he/she is the "Star". Look on the bulletin board for the facts about me.
You are welcome to send birthday treats. Just drop an e-mail or have your child tell me what day they would like to celebrate. Birthdays are celebrated in the late afternoon.
Please send a note, drop an e-mail or call the office if your child will be absent, tardy, or be leaving early. If you bring your child to school in the morning, please drop them at the small gym where they will be supervised until school time at approximately 8:00. At the end of the day, students will walk to the buses by way of the small gym where you may meet them if they are going home with you. Always send a note if there is a change: different bus, Girl or Boy Scouts, Little Bear, permission to go home with someone else or a different bus, and so on.
Our room contains yoga balls which will rotate among the students. There is a nice selection of library books. We have five Kindle Fire tablets and five Chromebooks with appropriate activities to encourage learning, provide academic practice, and stimulate fine motor skills.
I hope you and your child will feel comfortable in this room. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kessler
